Jean, tell me please about the relationship between the mighty strong Buffalo, (Africa’s most dangerous big five) and the timid Oxpecker?

The relationship between the African buffalo and the oxpecker bird is a fascinating example of mutualism—a win-win partnership in the wild.

The African Buffalo (Syncerus caffer):

Strong, social, and fiercely protective, the African buffalo is one of Africa’s “Big Five.” These powerful herbivores roam savannas and grasslands in large herds, constantly battling biting insects like ticks, which can carry disease or drain their energy.

The Oxpecker (Red-billed and Yellow-billed):

Enter the oxpecker—small, sharp-eyed birds often seen perched on the backs of buffalo. These birds feast on ticks, flies, and other parasites that plague the buffalo. As they peck through the thick hide, they also eat earwax, dead skin, and even drink a bit of the animal’s blood.
